A Lobby Becomes a Contemporary Gallery Space, Thanks to Digital Artwork

A jewel in Chicago’s architectural crown, the striking Kenzo Tange-designed 515 North State needed a lobby experience befitting an icon to unite its interior and exterior.
ESI reimagined the building as a contemporary art space, the centerpiece of which is a 23-foot-tall algorithmic media display that “paints” Impressionist-style scenes of daily life in the surrounding River North neighborhood. As the colors of one scene merge into another, new compositions are made.
A software system captures the energy of each neighborhood and uses it to affect the "painting" in real time, creating a unique media experience that is aesthetically beautiful and always changing.
The work ESI Design led at 515 North State reveals that new, engaging and artistic experiences can be found in the most unexpected places, including our modern Class-A office buildings.
